Pictures Without Words
Posted Thursday, February. 27th
Prior to the Winter break, students began exploring how to effectively send a message using only an image. We viewed examples, discussed/critiqued images/photographs and did some acting to learn how to convey a message using facial expression and body language. Students have now been asked to demonstrate their understanding of effectively communicating using only a picture. After viewing some past student examples, students were asked to create their own Picture Without Words. They are currently working on their picture and it is due Monday, March. 2nd.
Below are some examples from others. Students have been asked to be original and creative.
Here is the outline of this assignment:

Get the Message?
Posted Thursday, February. 27th
In Literacy, we are currently exploring a unit called Get the Message? In this unit, students are learning how to communicate a message. We have learned that we can send messages in many different ways: body language, facial expression, pictures, symbols, and written/spoken words. More specifically, students are working towards understanding that a combination of both pictures and words is the most effective way to communicate a message.

Who is Melvin Bubble
Creative Identity Project
Posted Tuesday, January. 21
We are coming to the end of our Identity unit in Health and it is time for a little project! Students were read the story "Who is Melvin Bubble?" After, we discussed the different people, characters, and objects who offered their perspective on who Melvin is. In the end, Melvin described himself. Students will now have the opportunity to complete a project in the style of the book. Each student has been given a package called "Who is..." with different pages for those closest to them as well as themselves to complete. Part of this assignment will need to be done at home for family to write, while the rest will be done at school. This weekend, I ask that your child completes the "Family" pages. They can choose any two family members to write a brief paragraph about the child. I ask for family members to have fun with this and also include gentle honesty. This will be such a great project for them to keep and reflect on over the years.

Courage Paragraphs
Posted Friday, January. 10th
We are wrapping up our What is Courage inquiry unit and it is not time for students to demonstrate their understanding of this question. This week we have learned how to write a proper paragraph that includes a topic sentence, supporting details and a conclusion sentence. Students' paragraphs are to answer the big questions: What is courage? As a class, we recorded all of the fiction and non-fiction examples of courage we learned about it class. After, we created a list of topic sentences to choose from. Then we chose our supporting details. Finally, we created a list of conclusion sentences to match the topic sentence chosen. Students have now begun writing their full rough drafts. Please view the documents below to learn more about the specifics of this assignment.
